When Decorating Runs In The Family

Inspiring Interiors, Interior Design Trends

This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating design-savvy mothers and their creative offspring. These five duos reveal that, while creativity is innate, it’s also something that can be nurtured in remarkable ways.

Known for their sophisticated but approachable interiors, Suzanne and Lauren McGrath know a thing or two about textiles. Take one look at the Instagram feed of the NYC-based mother-daughter duo, and you’ll see how their considered fabric choices create refined and inviting spaces. We love their #beyondthebeige approach to the Tribeca bedroom pictured above (plus, the cute, tailored beds remind us of our own Square Back Bed 😏).

CLEMENTS DESIGN

Tommy and Kathleen Clements’ design synergy has left them with a roster of high-profile clients, including Jennifer Anniston and Ellen DeGeneres. The mother-son pair approaches design with a smart and detail-oriented precision, and their mix of contemporary pieces and antiques feels ultra-chic.

ANGELA AND MARGHERITA MISSONI

In the Italian home of designer Margherita Missoni, daughter of Missoni Creative Director Angela, her family’s influence is readily apparent. The eldest of Angela’s daughters, Margherita cites her “Missoni upbringing—the use of pattern, color and texture” as a source of inspiration when decorating her home (Architectural Digest, August 2018). After all, it’s the custom Missoni rug that steals the show in the room pictured above!

NINA CAMPBELL AND RITA KONIG

Renowned designer Rita Konig grew up decorating. Her mother, designer Nina Campbell, began her career with #beyondthebeige icon Colefax & Fowler and ultimately earned the admiration of clients like Ringo Starr and Rod Stewart. Having worked in her mother’s shop, it’s no surprise that Konig caught the bug. While she’s developed a design language that’s uniquely her own, she incorporates familial touches (like the chairs on display in her above London home that were passed down to her from her mother).

SISTER AND APPLE PARISH

The family of legendary decorator Sister Parish has kept her legacy alive in more ways than one. Her daughter, Apple Parish, practices as an artist and owns a shop that sells decorative objects and furniture in Maine. And her granddaughter, whose living room is pictured above, boasts a home that feels quintessentially American with contrasting textiles and inherited antiques.
